Welcome

Job Announcement: A Post-doctorate and PhD student positions are available in the area of mixed-signal design of hardware accelerators. Detailed information is available here.

Welcome to the Wayne State Computer Systems and Deep Learning Research Laboratory. The focus research areas include computer systems design, deep learning, multimedia systems, multimedia computing, computer vision, hardware accelerators for AI, spiking neural networks, and automated video surveillance.

The lab is directed by Dr. Nabil J. Sarhan, an internationally recognized expert with extensive publications in top venues, including ACM Multimedia, IEEE TCSVT, ACM TOMM, and ICME. He has served as the primary investigator of multiple research projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Sun Microsystems, and Silicon Mechanics. Dr. Sarhan served as the Chair of the Interest Group on Media Streaming of the IEEE Multimedia Communication Technical Committee and as the Co-Director of the IEEE Multimedia Communication Technical Committee Review Board. He also served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. Dr. Sarhan has been involved in the organization of numerous international conferences in various capacities, including the General Chair, Chair, Technical Program Committee Co-Chair, Publicity Chair, and Track Chair. Besides, he has participated as a Panelist in major international conferences, a Panelist for the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Health, and as a Site Review Panelist for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Further, Dr. Sarhan has served as an Expert Witness in numerous patent infringement, patent validity, Inter Partes Review (IPR), and other intellectual property and corporate litigation cases related to computer systems, video streaming, multimedia systems, video coding, video transcoding, adaptive bitrate, video sharing, video security systems, video recording, data communication, low voltage differential signaling, and I/O interconnects. Dr. Sarhan is the recipient of the IEEE SEM Outstanding Professional of the Year Award, the Wayne State University President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the College of Engineering Excellence in Teaching Award. He was inducted into the WSU Academy of Teachers in 2022. Dr. Sarhan is a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Students who join the system design group will learn various system design skills and will become experienced with software, hardware, and/or networking aspects. These aspects include application development, deep learning, design of new algorithms, parallel processing, distributed systems, scheduling, and cross-layer optimization. Students who join the deep learning group will learn how to develop deep learning methods, systems, and/or accelerators using state-of-the-art tools.
